Ribbon Cutting – The Pilates Center
This is a wonderful occasion. Congratulations to Mary-Jane and George and their staff. And to Bob and Joe Singley and Frank Buckley for making this a reality.
It’s always exciting to celebrate a new business opening, but this is an especially happy occasion on many levels.
This mark’s Mary-Jane’s return to the City. You’re not exactly the prodigal daughter, but for those who may not remember, back in 1990 your full-service gym was in the Williamsburg Shopping Center. You’ve spent some long – albeit successful – years in the wilderness – of James City County -- but we’re very glad to welcome you back where you belong.
As someone who has been recognized by the Chamber of Commerce as Small Business Person of the Year, we salute your business acumen and proven track record of success. We know that as a small business owner you have a lot of pressures and special demands in this economy, and we appreciate your decision not only to locate your thriving business here, but also to make the substantial investment in re-configuring the space. It’s amazing.
Throughout your career, you’ve made a point of constantly challenging yourself, increasing your knowledge and skills. You studied Pilates before most people knew what it was much less how to pronounce it – and you continue to study and re-tool, becoming a Muscle Activation Techniques Specialist, for instance. You’re a great example of what all of us should do at every age. To use a Pilates term – you maintain your strong core – a lifelong commitment to fitness and health -- but you’re always striving, learning, and developing yourself and your staff to be one step ahead of the rest of your competitors.
You may not be in the arts district, but you clearly bring to your mission a sense of artistry and creativity – and a wonderful example of the intellectual capital and creative class that we welcome and want to nurture in Williamsburg.
